CS 101: Introduction to Computer Science

Apr 02, 2014. Ok so one of my friends found out he has symptoms (who I’ve been in contact w since I moved in last week) and I just don’t know if I should just say fuck it and pack my things and make the 8 hour drive back home tomorrow and quarantine back home (my bedroom is pretty isolated away from my family so I feel that it’s def a lot safer than being crammed inside my apartment bedroom like a. Laser printing facilities are provided in many locations around campus including computer labs and the Carrier and Rose Libraries. Documents may be submitted from most lab or library computers as well as from a personal computer provided the computer is connected to the JMU wired or wireless network.

With no party assuming responsibility for thousands of acres of UXO-infested land, the fate of Panama’s ex-United States artillery ranges remains unresolved. The grueling task of transforming the unusable land falls to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal community leaving the tainted ground waiting for release. JMU needed 10 fourth-quarter points to win 20-7 at Villanova. “Our goal is to be the best conference in the country and constantly try to improve on that brand that we have,” CAA commissioner.

Virtual Machine Installation

The main computer labs in the JMU CS department run Linux Mint.In contrast to operating systems like Windows and OS X, Linux is free and open-source.Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon are all powered by Linux. This page is for CS 101 students who would like to run Linux on their own computers, without having to replace their current OS.

Step 1: Install VirtualBox

Thanks to virtualization, it's easier than ever to get Linux up at running at home.VirtualBox is a free program that allows you to create and run 'virtual machines' on your computer.Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/ and download the installer for your host operating system. Run the installer and accept all the default options (click 'next' until done).

Note for Mac users: If installation fails, open System Preferences, go to Security & Privacy, and then click Allow next to 'System software from 'Oracle America, Inc.' was blocked from loading'. Then re-run the VirtualBox installer; it should succeed this time.

Step 2: Import the Image

The Unix Users Group maintains a virtual appliance based on Linux Mint that includes all the necessary software for the CS 101 labs. Simply download and open the file below to import it into VirtualBox. Once imported, it will require about 15-20 GB of hard disk space.

Please wait to complete the following steps until the lab period (first Wednesday in class). If you run into trouble, it's easier to help you in the moment than after the fact.

Step 3: Start the Machine

From within VirtualBox, click the green Start button to boot up 'JMU Linux Mint Fa19'. One of two things will happen:

  • If the virtual machine starts up with no error, proceed to the next step.

  • If you get an error message about 'VT-x' or 'AMD-V', please raise your hand and a TA will help you enable x86 virtualization in your BIOS. This process is complicated; you will need to reboot your laptop fully and press a hotkey (Dell = F2, HP = F10, Lenovo = F1). Windows 10 users may need to go to Settings → Update Security → Recovery → Advanced Startup → Restart Now.

Step 4: System Configuration

The first time you start the VM, it will guide you through the setup process. Please select the following options; there will be a separate screen for each one.

  1. English language -- you can install other language packs later on, but choose English now so that we can help you.

  2. English Keyboard -- just press Continue (the default 'English (US)' is correct for JMU).

  3. Eastern Time Zone -- just press Continue (the default 'New York' is correct for JMU).

  4. Who are you? -- this screen is very important. It sets up the admin account for the VM.

    • Enter your real name (e.g., Chris Mayfield)
    • Give your computer a short name (e.g., vbox)
    • Enter your JMU username (e.g., mayfiecs)
    • Choose a password that you will remember
    • Select the option 'Log in automatically'
    • Do NOT check 'Encrypt my home folder'

After you press Continue, it will take several minutes to finish configuring the operating system. Then the virtual machine will reboot; it may take a little longer this first time. When you see the desktop with icons, you're all done!

Please complete the following steps when you get home. The JMU wireless network might not appreciate everyone downloading large software packages all at the same time.

Step 5: System Updates

You virtual machine is like a second laptop inside your laptop. It has its own file system, application software, etc. You'll want to keep it up to date throughout the semester. Click the shield icon in the lower right (by the clock). Press the OK button to confirm the update manager settings. The rest should be self-explanatory.

Step 6: Install Software

For conveneince, we have bundled everything you'll need into a single download task. Double click the 'JMU CS VM Configuration' icon on your desktop, check the 'CS 101' box, and then press the 'Run' button. This step may take several minutes to complete, depending on your Internet connection and laptop speed.

A Message from the Dean

Dear Dukes,

As we prepare to welcome and support you through the fall semester, your friends at the JMU Libraries have been hard at work.

You will notice many changes to our spaces and services.

These have all been designed to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, faculty, and community members — while still offering the enthusiastic and expert assistance, vibrant programming, and caring approach you have come to expect from your Libraries.

This summary document draws on the efforts of our JMU Libraries Dean’s Council and Library Emergency Response Team (aLERT). These groups have developed scenario-based and safety-minded plans that incorporate scientific research and emerging best practices.

We are here for you in extraordinary times — but our success as a community depends on our willingness to protect each other. Thank you for your commitment to helping JMU “Stop the Spread.”

Sincerely,

Dr. Bethany Nowviskie
Dean of Libraries and Professor of English

Guiding Principles

Health and Safety: Our highest priority is to foster community health and protect the health and safety of all people who work in or visit the JMU Libraries. Services will be offered only to those who abide by safety protocols.

Continuity of Mission-Critical Activity: We will continue serving as JMU’s nexus for creative exploration, research, scholarship, and teaching and learning in a hybrid campus environment. We will modify, expand, or curtail in-person and online services appropriately.

Adaptability and Transparency: Our re-entry plan is evidence-based and designed to change in response to external developments or internal concerns. If changes to services occur, we will update the JMU Libraries website.

Re-Entry Timeline

Through Early August:

  • Remote services and robust, virtual support for teaching, learning, research, and creative exploration continue.
  • A contactless pickup service facilitates access to print resources from the Libraries’ collections.
  • Libraries faculty and staff work to prepare the buildings for a limited, safety-minded re-opening.

August 10 to August 25:

  • Most public spaces in the Libraries will become available to JMU community members and visitors who abide by safety protocols.
  • Limited in-person services will be offered during summer intersession hours at the Ask the Library desks in Carrier, Rose, and Music Libraries. Other service points will remain closed to the public.
  • Library users are encouraged to request items through the library catalog for pickup.
  • Most services and support for teaching, learning, research, and creative exploration will continue to be provided remotely and/or by appointment only.

August 26 Until Further Notice:

  • In-person services will be offered during our adjusted building hours at the Ask the Library desks in Carrier, Rose, and Music Libraries.
  • Other service areas, including Special Collections, Media Production Services, and The Makery, will be available by appointment only. JMU Libraries Classroom Technology Services will be on site to support in-person teaching.
  • The Libraries will continue providing robust remote support and online offerings.
  • Starbucks locations in Carrier and Rose will resume operation with safety protocols in place.

Use of the Libraries’ Facilities

Safe access to the JMU Libraries’ facilities will be informed by research, our guiding principles, and evolving JMU guidelines.

Our plans, which are subject to change in response to external developments or safety concerns, include the following measures:

  • In accordance with JMU “Stop the Spread” requirements, Libraries users and staff must wear face masks covering the mouth and nose (or, if an accommodation is needed, another approved face covering) in all public and shared spaces.
  • Libraries users and staff are asked to maintain adequate physical distance from others and follow all directional and other posted signage. Because spaces and furnishings have been configured and traffic flow adjusted to promote six feet of distancing, users may not relocate furniture.

Access to Books, Equipment, and Other Materials

Our approach to handling library materials is informed by scientific research and emergent trends and best practices from other libraries.

Measures enabling safe access to printed books, equipment, and other physical materials in our collection include the following:

  • We will prioritize electronic formats and digital content whenever possible. Course reserves will be fully digital.
  • To support reduced traffic and safe distancing in our facilities, users are encouraged to request books and other items through the library catalog. These will be available for pickup at the Ask the Library desk.
  • Library users are also encouraged to bring their own devices and use wireless printing from personal laptops when possible to reduce wait times and keep computers available for those who need them most.
  • All library books, equipment, and other physical library materials will be isolated for at least 72 hours after being returned to us. Book drops are available for contactless returns.

Consultations, Workshops, and Events

To promote community health and abide by Virginia and JMU guidelines:

  • All workshops or programs and most library instruction sessions will be offered online only.
  • Any in-person instruction must adhere to reduced classroom capacity guidelines.
  • Consultations and tech support will be offered online or over the phone to the greatest extent possible.
  • Libraries’ spaces may not be reserved for events or meetings until further notice.

Teaching, Learning, and Research Support

Libraries’ faculty and staff continue to offer dedicated and enthusiastic support for our community’s teaching and learning needs, research and scholarship, and creative exploration.
